Shaw Mortar Mix, a blend of masonry cement and graded sand, is a practical product for the handy-person or professional. It is ideal for laying brick, block or stone for chimneys, fireplaces, garden walls, grills, or stone walls. It is also excellent for parging or repair, patching and pointing masonry joints.
Shaw Mortar Mix is available in 25kg bags at hardware and building supply centers. One 25kg bag yields approximately 35 bricks or 22 concrete blocks with 1cm mortar joint.
Empty the bag contents into a mixer, mortar box, wheel barrow, or onto a smooth working surface. Form a crater and add water, a little at a time and mix thoroughly. If mixture is thick, add more water. Use above 2°C. Keep from freezing.
Concrete block: Before setting block into position on mortar bed, butter an end with mortar.
Laying brick: Lay brick into position qfter buttering end, tap into place and be sure to level.
Truck pointing: When pointing up old masonry, remove loose mortar, clean and moisten joints. Apply with pointing towel.
