Wood Pellets

Shaw Resources operates two pellet production facilities in Atlantic Canada. Our first first pellet production facility was commissioned in 1995 and has consistently grown production since that time. Shaw Resources has been a member of the Pellet Fuels Institute (PFI) www.pelletheat.org since its inception in the early 1990s. In 2009, Shaw Resources became a member of the Wood Pellet Association of Canada www.pellet.org. Active involvement in both the PFI and the CPA has allowed us to keep abreast of industry developments and trends.

Eastern Embers Plant in Hardwoodlands, NS

Our plant in Hardwoodlands Nova Scotia was commissioned in 1995. This facility uses predominantly softwood fiber and focuses primarily on bagging high quality, residential heating pellets. Markets for fuel pellets include the local Atlantic Canadian region, North Eastern USA and Europe. This facility also produces bagged bedding product for North American and European markets. In addition, bulk pellets are shipped into both the local industrial market and Europe.

Belledune Plant in Belledune, NB

Our Belledune New Brunswick plant was commissioned in 2007 and produces bulk industrial pellets for the off-shore market. This facility uses both hardwood and softwood to produce an extremely high quality industrial pellet.

Residential Pellets

Shaw Resources residential pellets are marketed under the brand name Eastern Embers. These pellets are produced in Hardwoodlands Nova Scotia using our local softwood species (predominantly our native spruce). These softwood fibers are sourced from selected sawmills in an effort to ensure clean, consistent, high quality raw feed. We pay close attention to maintaining feedstock quality at the sawmill, in transit and receiving and handling at our production facility. This quality feed combined with many years of production experience, results in a very high quality densified pellet fuel. Eastern Embers is an extremely low ash product with a very high BTU value.

Shaw Resources uses no additives, binders or chemically treated wood of any sort. Eastern Embers is a true 100% natural wood fiber pellet fuel.

Quality Control

We maintain an in-house Quality Control / Quality Assurance program that tracks quality from the time fiber is received on-site until the pellets are loaded on a truck for shipment. Every bag produced has a date code which allows us to track product through to the consumer’s appliance and cross reference daily QA / QC records if issues arise. We use 2 independent external laboratories for product verification. This ensures Eastern Embers is a product we can be proud of and consumers can trust and have confidence in.

As a result of this attention to detail, Eastern Embers brand is generally accepted as the benchmark for quality in markets where it is offered. Eastern Embers meets or exceeds the Premium grade standards of the Pellet Fuels Institute.

Industrial Pellets

Shaw Resources produces industrial pellets at both our Nova Scotian and New Brunswick facilities.

Our Nova Scotian industrial pellets are the same softwood product bagged for residential use and as such are an extremely high quality, low ash, high BTU product. To date, small quantities of this product are marketed locally to industrial users. Periodically, production levels allow some of this product to be exported to Europe through the Port of Halifax.

Our Belledune New Brunswick facility uses a combination of softwood and hardwood fiber for raw feed. Feedstocks are sourced from local sawmills as well as processed roundwood. Our on-site chipping capabilities ensure that both our quality and supply needs are maintained. In-house QA / QC testing as well as independent, external laboratory verification are essential in maintaining our products reputation for quality. Finished product is shipped through the modernized facilities at the port of Belledune.
